The Backstreet Boys are still lumbering through their comeback, bless them, even though they’re well past the point of calling themselves “boys” with a straight face. Then again, New Men On The Block didn’t sound so good, either. Since it’s been a long time since they were a pop culture linchpin, they’ve introduced their newest song, “In A World Like This,” with a lyric video that runs concurrently with a timeline of the group’s greatest achievements: the number one singles, the record-breaking sales, the Grammy nominations, and so forth. It’s part genuine remembrance, part sentimental manipulation—an invitation to hear their new song because you liked their old songs, presented as transparently as any retro act might. (Look out for Poison’s “This Rose Has Its Thorns,” released alongside ‘N Sync’s “Hi Hi Hi.”) But you’re listening, right? Because why wouldn’t you want to revive the ’90s? Imagine yourself sitting in your adolescent bedroom, Trapper Keeper covered in Lisa Frank stickers, Pokemon on the television and Waffle Crisp in your cereal bowl. Take us back to the womb! It’s got at least one supercharged critical approval, and if the trip down memory lane works, maybe they’ll see a spike in sales of their old records. The final word on this one will have to wait, though.
